The razor
Wade & Butcher were among the best-known Sheffield razor makers of the 19th century, and the Original Arrow was one of their signature razors. This one dates to around the 1890s. The blade is etched Original Arrow Razor, Medium Hollow Ground, and the tang carries the Wade & Butcher, Sheffield, England stamp with the arrow and cross marks.
The scales are pressed horn, my favourite kind. Horn was heated and pressed into a mould to form the engraving, which was then filled with gold. It’s rare to find one of these still with its original scales and its original box.
What’s included
- The razor
- Its original Wade & Butcher box
Restoration and condition
The scales have been restored and re-nourished, and the pressed horn engraving restored by hand. The pivot has been re-peened in brass with new internal washers and external hardware. The blade is centred and opens and closes well. The wedge is original and has been kept intact. The blade has been restored conservatively, to keep its original etching and patina.
The blade keeps its age: light patina and some wear to the etching, which has been left as it is rather than polished away.
Honing
Set on a progression of Japanese synthetic stones and finished on a Charnley Forest natural stone, then stropped and sanitised, ready to shave.
The natural stone shown in the photos isn’t included.
